Terrestrial Conservation.
Forest conservation, REDD+ support, biodiversity surveys, land restoration, wetland management, and human-wildlife conflict reduction.
Overview
Tanzania is home to some of the most iconic landscapes and biodiversity on the planet, from the Serengeti plains and Kilimanjaro forests to the Miombo woodlands and the Eastern Arc Mountains. These landscapes support extraordinary wildlife, regulate water supplies for millions of people, and provide livelihoods for rural communities. But deforestation, land degradation, human-wildlife conflict, and climate change are putting them under increasing pressure.
At Blue Green Tanzania Consult, our terrestrial conservation work addresses these challenges directly.

Forest Conservation and Management
Tanzania's forests are disappearing faster than they can recover. Charcoal production, agricultural expansion, and illegal logging are the main drivers. We support forest conservation by helping communities and local governments develop and implement forest management plans, conduct forest inventories, strengthen patrols and monitoring, and access funding for forest protection through mechanisms like REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation).

Biodiversity Surveys and Wildlife Monitoring
Knowing what species exist in a landscape, where they are, and how their populations are changing is the foundation of all conservation planning. We support biodiversity surveys across different ecosystem types, forests, grasslands, wetlands, and agricultural margins, using standardised methods that produce reliable, comparable data over time.

Land Degradation and Restoration
Large areas of Tanzania's land are degraded through overgrazing, poor farming practices, soil erosion, and deforestation. Degraded land loses its productivity, increases vulnerability to drought and floods, and drives communities into poverty. We support land restoration programmes, reforestation, soil conservation, agroforestry, and sustainable land management, that rebuild the health of the land and the livelihoods that depend on it.

Human-Wildlife Conflict Management
As wildlife habitats shrink and human populations grow, conflict between people and wildlife is increasing across Tanzania. Elephants raiding crops, lions killing livestock, and hippos destroying fields are daily realities for many rural families. We help communities and conservation managers develop practical, humane, and evidence-based approaches to reduce these conflicts, from early warning systems and physical deterrents to community compensation schemes and land-use planning.

Wetland and River Ecosystem Management
Tanzania's freshwater ecosystems, rivers, lakes, floodplains, and wetlands, are under pressure from pollution, encroachment, and over-extraction. These ecosystems are critical water sources, flood buffers, and biodiversity hotspots. We support wetland assessments, conservation planning, and community-based management of freshwater resources.

Agroforestry and Sustainable Land Use
Farming and conservation are too often treated as opposites. Agroforestry, integrating trees into farming systems, is one of the most powerful ways to reconcile them. Trees on farms improve soil fertility, reduce erosion, provide shade and timber, sequester carbon, and increase farm income over time. We support the design and implementation of agroforestry programmes that benefit both farmers and the environment.

Climate Change Adaptation in Land-Based Systems
Changing rainfall patterns, prolonged droughts, and unpredictable seasons are hitting Tanzania's farmers and pastoralists hard. We help rural communities understand climate risks, adapt their farming and land management practices, and access climate adaptation funding to build long-term resilience.

Environmental Impact Assessment Support
Development projects, roads, dams, mines, and buildings, can have serious negative effects on the natural environment if not carefully planned. We support environmental impact assessment processes, helping NGOs, communities, and local governments understand and engage with these assessments, and ensuring that the voices of affected communities are heard.
